In January 2008, the CALIFORNIA ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® (C.A.R.) created the Green Task Force, a group designed to help C.A.R. embark on an initiative to become greener and, in the process, educate members and the public about green real estate.

Why?
It may surprise you, but the biggest producer of green house emissions is not cars, but homes. That fact, plus rising energy costs and a decision by California’s Public Utilities Commission mandating that new housing developments are "zero net energy" by 2020, has caused homebuilders, homeowners, property managers, REALTORS®, local governments and others to focus on the energy-efficiency of homes.
As the state focuses on reducing its carbon footprint and consumers seek ways to reduce their homes’ energy costs, the emphasis will be placed on eco-friendly designs and cost-savings.
At the nexus of the green movement and the real estate transaction are homes. As a trade association with more than 165,000 members, C.A.R. can have big impact on the movement to make homes more energy efficient, to help homeowners and potential homeowners aware of greener enhancements and options, and to help California consumers make more sustainable choices.
